    Consolidated Interim Storage

Community acceptance and approval of radioactive waste remains a hotly debated topic. Nevada remains strongly opposed to building the Yucca Mountain repository, while local communities in southeastern New Mexico have formally partnered with Holtec International to develop a consolidated interim storage facility for used reactor fuel. A separate storage site is planned just across the border in West Texas, under management of an Orano-Waste Control Specialists venture formally called Interim Storage Partners. Meanwhile, Deep Isolation is proposing a new disposal method for high-level waste. Panelists will discuss opportunities and challenges associated with state, and local jurisdictions as they seek to site, construct and operate nuclear waste storage facilities.

    • Eric K. Knox, Vice President of Strategic Development, Nuclear & Environment, Management Services Group, AECOM

US Army Corps of Engineers-Decommissioning Opportunities

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is taking bids for decommissioning of its deactivated nuclear reactor facility at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and is preparing for a corresponding procurement for the retired power plant at Fort Greely, Alaska. These historic reactors were built and operated under the Army Nuclear Power Program and ceased operation in the early 1970s. Both projects will present unique challenges -- working on a small footprint close to research and residential areas at Fort Belvoir, near Washington, D.C., for the SM-1 reactor; and removal of the encased SM-1A reactor components from an operating heating plant while working around the extreme Alaskan weather at Fort Greely. The Army Corps will discuss the contract opportunities, with awards expected next year for the SM-1 reactor and in 2022 for the SM-1A.

  4. 9:00 AM – 9:30 AM

Tribal Strategies and Opportunities in Radioactive Waste Management

Tribal governments can be instrumental to help manage radioactive materials and nuclear facilities. Tribes located near a nuclear power reactor, may have concerns about the operation of the reactor or the at-reactor storage of spent fuel. There are many incidents that tribal governments have expressed interest in actually hosting a site for a spent fuel storage facility, such as the Private Fuel Storage facility in Utah. This session will discuss the opportunities available for industry to work with tribal governments ensuring that radioactive waste transportation and use are managed safely and efficiently.

    • Richard Arnold, Chairman/Spokesperson, Pahrump Paiute Tribe/CGTO
    • George Gholson, Tribal Council Member, Timbisha Shoshone Tribe
