My brothers worked in the uranium mines when I was growing up. When the Tribe was recognized as an affected government and people I was more familiar with nuclear and the affects of radiation. I was also aware of the affects of long term exposure. My father had many different types of ailments due to his exposure to the chemicals and materials involved in the uranium processing activities. I was exposed to radioactive material when I was stationed overseas when the Chernobyl disaster occurred. As a Tribal leader it is important to educate our people about radioactive material and the impacts on the land and our beliefs on how we should take care of the land.
